About

Hi there, thanks for dropping by. What will you find here?

Mondays… reviews
Wednesdays… devotionals
Fridays… interviews and thoughts

I’m Janet Sketchley, a Canadian writer whose passion is fiction. My unpublished novel, Praying for the Enemy, received third place in Risen Books’ 2011 publishing contest and a previous version was short-listed for the 2008 Best New Canadian Christian Author Award. I’m still working to find a home for it and its companion story, Secrets and Lies.

I’m excited to have a true story in the award-winning anthology A Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider, which released in May 2011. You can read an excerpt from “The Road Trip That Wasn’t” at That’s Life Communications’ website.

My published work includes over 100 articles, reviews and stories printed/reprinted under my own name and under the pen name of Joanna Mallory. I’m a member of The Word Guild, InScribe Christian Writers’ Fellowship and American Christian Fiction Writers, and former fiction columnist for InScribe’s FellowScript newsletter.

I’m also a wife, mom, daughter, friend, neighbour… a Christian growing in faith, trying to balance relationships and responsibilities. Can you relate?

Because of Jesus,

Janet

  1. Joanna:
A lovely introduction, setting a beautiful tone.
I’ll return to the main posts page, and check that out …
Lord take and use this new venture for His glory.
    Peter.

  2. Enjoyed this visit almost as much as a face-to-face one, Joanna. Refreshing even without the cup of Celtic Colors.

  3. Hi Joanna,

    Just a glimpse of God
    for His radiance is truth;
    each day He gives
    to worship and praise.
    Just a glimpse of God
    daily in His presence live
    let His radiance fill
    and His glow forever give.

God bless you in your writings and may the power of His spirit continue to inspire.

  4. Peter, Mary, Don and O. Stephen — thank you for your warm greetings.

“Just a glimpse of God” — I love this image. Seeing all of Him would be too much for us in our present state, but a glimpse is enough to keep us going.

The LORD bless each of you with the warmth His presence.

  5. Hi Joanna
In the Summer I see glimpses of God in my garden. Glimpses? Huge pictures… from the whole panorama of daisies and lilies and roses, to the myriad tiny insects bumbling excitedly all over the tiny flowers that make up the big parasol blooms of my dill.

But I see glimpses of God in the nursing home where I work… the tired and broken bodies that harbour intrepid souls… people with lives lived and who make new lives within their most difficult circumstances and their pain… and going to sleep at night wondering… will I wake up? I see their faith (some of them)

And I see glimpses of God in the care and love a nurse or health care aid will give to a resident with dementia who told them ten minutes ago that they were F***ing B***’s (pardon the language… God lives there too)

I hope you find a publisher for your book… I’ll line up to buy it. There is a need for us to think about this and our ‘enemies’ are in unlikely places (work, even family)

I’ll be praying for it to find a home

  6. Diana, thank you for those glimpses of God. You’re right, He’s everywhere, and His grace abounds.

Your work gives you a wonderful place to show Him to so many people. I pray for His continued grace and strength in your spirit to live as a blessing to those around you.

All prayer for my book is appreciated! We’ll see what the LORD has planned.

    Blessings today!

  7. Joanna,
Thanks for putting me on your blogroll. I hope my desire to encourage thinking in biblical principles and warmly applying them will lead to more glimpses of God for all our readers. Isaiah’s glimpse brought him to his knees (chapter 6). May the Lord bless us too.

    Carol Brandt

  8. Hi Joanna,

Great to learn more about you. I’m so pleased that we were asked to share our blogs over at TWG. I’ll stop by again.

Have a wonderful Christmas with your family.

  9. An encouraging and heart-warming introduction, Joanna. I like the concept of “no war stories.”
Glimpses of God is a good line for those times when one is struggling. Good line, Stephen.

  10. Great to meet you on your turf. I think I’m going to find peace checking in here regularly, although I may not always let you know I’m doing so.
Blessings to you as you write.

  11. Oh my goodness! Why didn’t I connect you with Joanna Mallory? I’m so confused. This info is really helpful. Is there any way I can see a chapter or two of one or the other of your manuscripts? I’d love to get a taste of your story and writing. You could e-mail me a file, couldn’t you?

  12. Glad I stopped by via Walk With Him Wednesday. I will return to read more.

God settled me in Manitoba, what part of Canada had He placed you?

    • I’m in Nova Scotia. Isn’t it great to be able to meet people from all over? This is my first time at Walk With Him Wednesday for a while, and what a fine collection of blogs!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  13. Hi Janet,

Your blog is what mine wants to look like when it grows up.

    thanks for your encouraging comments.

    • I’m glad I found your blog, Margaret. I’ve bookmarked it to go back! My only book right now is the A Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider anthology, where I’m one of the contributors. Lots of good (short) things to read in it!
